Resume checker for data analysts

Analyst resumes are usually readable and still score badly, because the tools are listed in a skills row and the analysis is described as “reporting”. Both are measurable.

What data analysts get screened on

01

The term list for an analyst posting is short and literal: SQL, a BI tool, a warehouse, sometimes a pipeline tool. Coverage is decided by whether those exact strings appear, not by how good the analysis was.

Core terms
  • SQLSkills line plus one bullet naming the warehouse you query
  • PythonExperience bullet — say what you automated with it
  • Data visualizationSkills line, and a bullet naming the audience
  • ETLExperience bullet: what it replaced and how often it runs
  • Data modelingExperience bullet — the model, not the modeling
  • Tableau / Power BI / LookerSkills line, plus one bullet with the dashboard's owner
Terms that separate analysts from reporting
  • BigQuery / SnowflakeExperience bullet, next to the model you built
  • pandasSkills line; it is a tool, not an achievement
  • A/B testingExperience bullet only if you designed or read out the test
  • Stakeholder managementOne bullet, naming which team used the result

Two bullets, before and after

02

Each rewrite reuses only the figures already in the original line. Nothing here invents a number you would have to defend in an interview.

before

Helped with the ETL pipeline; report refresh time went from 5 hours to 40 minutes.

after

Automated the daily ETL load in Python and Airflow, cutting report refresh from 5 hours to 40 minutes.

The number was already there. The rewrite moves it to the end and names the tool that produced it.

before

Responsible for building 11 finance dashboards in Tableau.

after

Replaced a weekly spreadsheet pull with 11 Tableau dashboards that finance now owns.

“Responsible for” plus a count says nothing about change. The rewrite says what stopped happening.

Where these resumes break

03
  • —Charts pasted as images carry no text. “Data visualization” only counts if the words are also in the file.
  • —A skills grid built as a table extracts cell by cell, which can put Python above your summary in the parsed order.
  • —Bullets that open with “Responsible for” lose content points even when the analysis behind them was strong.

A made-up five-year analyst. The resume is clean single-column; the points it loses are keyword and content points, which is exactly what the fix list on the report shows.

This sample was written for this page, not scraped from a real candidate. The score is computed by the same rules your file would run through, so it moves whenever the rules change — which is why it is not a hard-coded number.
